Notes From The President

You're feeding the blade through the first pilot hole on a 300 inside cut project, and you think & what have I started!???" I guess I do it every time. But then I fall into that groove and the pieces just seem to fall out the bottom, then it's done. It's usually about then that I realize the project was cut as a gift for someone else, and & why didn't I stack cut one for me to keep!!!?" There's always more wood, but I always feel like I'm giving a little piece of myself away with each project. It's sure worth the look of appreciation and amazement on the person's face that you give it to. It certainly isn't for the money. I guess that's what makes us scrollers!!! So remember to stay on the lines, scrap to the right.

Gary

Welcome to the Motor City Scrollers website! We are a group of men and women who enjoy the "art" of scrolling. The group meets the 3rd Thursday of the month at the Taylor Senior Center. At this meeting we discuss club business, make plans, watch demonstrations and socialize. A discussion may take place about the best type of blade to use or where a certain kind of wood can be found. The agenda includes these discussions as well as a show and tell period and a raffle. Members win door prizes (small tools, patterns, etc.) and the funds from the raffle purchase prizes for future raffles as well as fund the various club activities. The dues for the club are $15.00 and these also fund our yearly projects.

The group welcomes all levels of scrollers, from those who are interested in scrolling but do not yet own a saw to advanced level people. If you are interested in scrolling, our club is a great place to start. Everyone has an opinion on the best saw; let's just say we do not all agree on that point! If you do not own a saw or are thinking about purchasing a new one, the Weekend Workshops are where you should begin.

The Weekend Workshops take place the Saturday following the club meeting. This is the heart of the group and the most fun. One of the members hosts the group at their house and we descend on their humble abode for a day of food and a planned activity. The host/hostess provides lunch and, for $5 members can learn a new scrolling technique (i.e. 3-D scrolling,) explore other types of woodworking (i.e. ringmaster) or even try their hand at a new hobby (i.e. stained glass.) Members are told ahead of time what type of materials to bring and most bring a saw with them. If you do not yet own a saw or would like to experiment, this is an excellent time to 'test drive' another member's saw or use one of the two club saws! Many members use the workshop to see how other saws handle before purchasing or upgrading their own equipment. In addition, the Workshops give members an opportunity to learn something new and walk away with a finished project. Since the skill levels of the group range from beginner to absolute advanced, the Workshops are a great place to learn whatever you need to enjoy this exciting hobby. Members are famous for taking an entire afternoon to help other folks with their craft.
